Terpenes: the secret behind the aroma of each CBD strain

If you have ever smelled several CBD flowers in a row, you will have noticed each one has its own character: some are sweet and fruity, others smell of pine, citrus or wood. That personality comes from terpenes.

What are terpenes?

They are natural aromatic compounds produced by many plants: they are in orange peel, lavender, pine and pepper. In hemp they are concentrated in the trichomes, the tiny shiny glands covering the buds. Every strain has its own mix, which is why no two smell the same.

The most common terpenes

  • Myrcene: earthy, herbal, ripe-fruit aroma (think mango). One of the most common in hemp.
  • Limonene: citrus notes of lemon and orange.
  • Caryophyllene: spicy, black pepper and clove.
  • Pinene: fresh, resinous pine forest.
  • Linalool: floral, like lavender.
  • Humulene: woody and earthy, also found in hops.

The aroma of our strains

Each flower has a different profile depending on its genetics. Blueberry is sweet and fruity; Northern Lights is earthy and woody; Wedding Cake reminds of vanilla; and Amnesia mixes sweet, citrus and spicy notes.

How to protect terpenes

Terpenes are very volatile: heat, light and air make them evaporate. That is why it is so important to store your flowers properly in an airtight jar, in the dark and somewhere cool.
